The US Federal government distributes over $10 billion annually in R&D grants to companies and research organizations from a variety of technological fields. Although the government prefers supporting American organizations, some grants are aacecible foreign entities as well – particularly in the fields of Health Sciences (NIH) and Homeland Security (DHS). The federal funds publish solicitations for submitting R&D proposals, and companies interested in applying for the federal grant must identify the relevant solicitation and submit a detailed request within the specified date. For NIH it is also possible to apply without a solicitation, a process called Investigator Initiated Application (particularly common in NIH grants).
